Christmas and New Year travel in London 2026/27: what runs, what doesn't, and how to plan around it
London between 20 December and 4 January is two weeks of exceptions: four days when the railway all but stops, a fortnight of the year's biggest engineering works, a ticketed fireworks night with the West End closed to traffic, and a string of events with no parking. This guide walks through it day by day, links to the detail pages, and shows where a pre-booked fixed-fare car is the sensible answer.

Airports at Christmas
All six London airports fly through the period, including Christmas Day. The rail links are the weak point: closed on 25 December, patchy on 26 December and 1 January, and subject to works in between. Airport-by-airport rail status: Heathrow Express · Gatwick Express and Thameslink · Stansted and Luton trains. - Is there any public transport in London on Christmas Day?
- No. There is no Tube, bus, rail, DLR, tram or Overground service on 25 December, and the airport rail links are closed. Taxis and pre-booked private hire are the only transport.
- Which days should I avoid relying on the train?
- 24 December after early evening, all of 25 December, 26 December (a Saturday in 2026, when most operators run nothing) and 1 January. Between 27 December and 3 January check the engineering works page for your route.
- Do fares go up at Christmas?
