New Year's Eve taxi in London: fixed fare before, during and after midnight
Every year at 00:40 on 1 January the same screenshot goes round: £190 for four miles. New Year's Eve in London is the one night when the apps stop being a fallback and a pre-booked car with a fixed price and an agreed pickup point becomes the only sane plan. We take a limited number of NYE bookings; the price you confirm is the price you pay at 00:30.
What happens on NYE: road closures, travel status, Tube hours
New Year's Eve in central London is a managed event. Roads around Westminster, Whitehall, Victoria Embankment, Westminster Bridge, Waterloo Bridge and the South Bank close from early afternoon (usually 14:00) and stay closed until around 06:00 on New Year's Day. The fireworks are ticketed, with viewing areas on the Embankment and South Bank that fill and lock by early evening. Tube, buses and many rail services run through the night, and in recent years TfL has made travel free between around 23:45 and 04:30 — the Mayor confirms the arrangement each December. Free does not mean fast: Westminster, Embankment and Charing Cross stations close or become exit-only, and queues to get into Waterloo and Victoria after midnight run to an hour.
Our fireworks getting-there-and-home guide covers the fireworks themselves in detail.
Why apps surge after midnight and what a fixed fare means
Ride-hailing prices are set by an algorithm balancing riders against drivers in a small area at that moment. At 00:20 on 1 January, hundreds of thousands of people want a car at once, drivers cannot physically reach the closure zone, and the multiplier climbs to 3×, 5×, sometimes more — with cancellations on top as drivers pick better fares. Our surge pricing guide explains the mechanics.
A RushXO booking works the other way round. You book in December; we quote a fixed price for the journey at that time; we allocate a driver who is expecting to be at a specific point at, say, 00:45; the price never moves. It is a reservation, not an auction.
Pickup points that work after the fireworks (outside the closure zone)
Nothing on wheels gets inside the closure zone until well after 01:00, so we agree a pickup point outside it when you book and put it on your confirmation:
- North of the river: Northumberland Avenue is closed; we use points around Trafalgar Square's north side (Pall Mall East), Kingsway/Aldwych, or Victoria Street near Buckingham Gate.
- South of the river: Waterloo Road by the Old Vic, Blackfriars Road, or Lambeth Road — a 10–15 minute walk from the South Bank viewing areas.
- Restaurants and hotels: if you are inside the zone (Savoy, Corinthia, County Hall), we agree the nearest reachable point and time with you and the concierge.
Drivers have your mobile number and you have theirs. If the crowd moves slowly, the driver waits — the fare does not change.
Parties, restaurants, hotels: staggered pickups
Most NYE bookings are not the fireworks at all: they are a dinner in Mayfair ending at 01:00, a house party in Clapham, a hotel ballroom in Park Lane. We book a fixed pickup time and a fixed price. Groups with several cars can stagger pickups (some leave at midnight, some at 02:00) on one booking — see booking multiple cars.
Airport runs on 31 December and 1 January
Early flights on 1 January are the classic NYE booking: a 05:00 pickup after a night out, with heavy engineering works on the railway and no Heathrow Express until later in the morning. We combine the night pickup and the airport run at a fixed price. See New Year's Day airport transfers.

From-prices as published on our airport pages. Your exact fare is fixed when you book — the price on the confirmation is the price you pay, whatever the traffic or the date. Postcode zone charges may apply for City, Bloomsbury and King's Cross addresses.
Group MPVs
Six friends and a fixed price is where the arithmetic gets very good: an MPV from the West End to Clapham or Islington is roughly £8–£12 a head at 01:00 on New Year's Day. 8-seaters are available in small numbers; book them first.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the Tube free on New Year's Eve?
- In recent years TfL has made Tube, bus, tram, DLR and Overground travel free from around 23:45 on 31 December to 04:30 on 1 January. The Mayor confirms the arrangement each December. Free does not mean quick — central stations close or run exit-only after the fireworks.
- Can you pick us up right by the fireworks?
- Not inside the closure zone: roads around Westminster and the South Bank are shut to traffic until around 06:00. We agree a pickup point a short walk outside it and put it on your confirmation.
- How much does a taxi cost on New Year's Eve in London?
- Our fares are fixed at booking and are the same fares we quote all year: a saloon across central London is typically £25–£45, Heathrow to the West End from £65. The price on the confirmation does not change at midnight.
- What if we're late to the pickup point?
- Call the driver. Fifteen minutes' waiting is free, and drivers will wait longer by arrangement on the night. The fare is unchanged.
- Can I book by phone or WhatsApp?
- Yes — call +44 20 8888 9988 or use the contact page. Online booking gives you an instant fixed fare and is the quickest route on busy days.
