Taxi on Christmas Day in London: the only transport that runs, and what it costs

Every year people land at Heathrow, step out of a Christmas lunch or try to get across town to family on 25 December and discover that London has switched itself off. A pre-booked, fixed-fare car is the only reliable way to move around the capital on Christmas Day. Book by 20 December and the car, the driver and the price are all confirmed.

What runs on Christmas Day in London (nothing)

On 25 December there is no Tube, no bus, no Overground, no DLR, no tram, no Elizabeth line and no National Rail service anywhere in London. Heathrow Express, Gatwick Express, Stansted Express, Thameslink and the Luton DART are all closed. This is not a reduced timetable: it is a full shutdown that lasts from the last trains on Christmas Eve until services resume on the morning of Boxing Day, and on Boxing Day 2026 (a Saturday) most rail operators still run nothing.

The airports themselves are open: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton all handle flights on 25 December, albeit fewer than usual. Taxis and private hire are the only transport link between those airports and the city. Black cabs do work on Christmas Day, but far fewer of them, on the highest tariff of the year, and you cannot pre-book one to be at a specific door at a specific time. Ride-hailing apps operate with whatever drivers choose to log on, at whatever the surge multiplier is at that moment.

Black cab Christmas tariff vs our fixed fare

Licensed black cabs charge Tariff 3 on Christmas Day (the same rate as after 10pm) plus a fixed public-holiday extra on every journey. On a long run — Heathrow to central London, or across London to the Home Counties — the meter can comfortably pass £120–£150, and you will only know the final figure when you arrive. That is if you can find one: many drivers take the day off and there is no rank at most hotels or residential streets.

A RushXO car is the opposite model: you tell us the pickup, the destination and the time, we give you a fixed price, and that price is what you pay. Traffic is light on Christmas Day, so journeys are quick, but the price would be the same either way.

Booking cut-off and how many cars we run on the day

We allocate a fixed pool of drivers who have chosen to work Christmas Day, and we do not overbook it. In practice that means:

Christmas Day lunch, church, family visits: typical journeys

Airport arrivals on the 25th

Long-haul flights from the US, Gulf and Asia land on Christmas morning. Your driver waits in arrivals with a name board and takes you straight to the door — the only door-to-door option that exists that day. See the Christmas Day airport transfer page.

Christmas lunch

Out at 12:30, back at 17:00, both legs booked together as a return. Ask for a saloon or, for the grandparents and the presents, an MPV.

Church and midnight mass

Late on Christmas Eve or early Christmas morning: fixed price, driver waiting outside afterwards.

Hotel guests

Concierges book us in blocks for guests who want to see the city or reach family on the 25th. See hotel and concierge accounts.

How booking works

Frequently asked questions

Can I book a taxi on Christmas Day itself?
Occasionally, if a driver has a gap, but we cannot promise it. Every year the on-the-day calls outnumber the cars we have left by a wide margin. Book in advance — ideally by 20 December — and you will not need to worry about it.
Do you provide child seats on Christmas Day?
Yes, on request when you book. Tell us the ages of the children and we will fit the right seats. There is no extra charge for child seats on any of our journeys.
Can I get an MPV or 8-seater on Christmas Day?
Yes. MPVs (up to 6 passengers) and 8-seaters (up to 7) are part of the Christmas Day pool, but there are fewer of them than saloons, so book them early.
Is there any public transport at all on 25 December?
No. Transport for London and National Rail run no services on Christmas Day, and the airport rail links are closed. A handful of private coach operators run limited long-distance services; within London, road is the only option.
Is the fare really fixed over Christmas and New Year?
Yes. The price you see when you confirm the booking is the price you pay. It does not change with traffic, weather, flight delays or the date. What you may see is a different from-price for the peak days than for a Tuesday in March — that is set when you get your quote, not added afterwards.
How far ahead should I book?
For 24, 25, 26 and 31 December and 1 January we allocate a fixed number of vehicles and drivers, and once they are gone we cannot add more. Book by 20 December for Christmas and by 15 December for New Year's Eve to be safe; we will always try to help later than that, but cannot guarantee it.
