Christmas engineering works 2026/27 — tracked weekly — road alternative for every closure
Network Rail Christmas works · 24 Dec 2026 – 4 Jan 2027Updated weekly · every London terminal · every airport line

Christmas and New Year engineering works 2026/27: which London stations and lines close, and when

Network Rail does more engineering over Christmas than in any other fortnight, because the railway is at its quietest. For passengers that means London terminals closed for days at a time, airport expresses replaced by buses, and journeys that take twice as long. This page lists every closure that affects London as it is published, and the fixed-fare road alternative for each.

Detail on each: Heathrow Express · Gatwick Express and Thameslink · Stansted and Luton

Terminal by terminal

Paddington
The terminal most often closed at Christmas because the Old Oak Common and Crossrail works use the quiet period. When it closes, Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth line to Heathrow stop; the Piccadilly line becomes the only rail route and takes an hour.
Euston
HS2 works have closed Euston on several recent Christmases. No Avanti or London Northwestern; passengers bussed from Milton Keynes or Watford Junction.
King's Cross and St Pancras
Usually open at Christmas but affected by Thameslink core closures, which cut the through-route to Gatwick and Luton.
Liverpool Street
Stansted Express diversions to Stratford or Tottenham Hale are common; the last Stansted Express finishes early on 24 December.
Victoria
Gatwick Express is reduced through the period and suspended on 25 December; Southern runs a thin Boxing Day service in some years.
Waterloo
Typically the least affected terminal, but South Western Railway runs nothing on 25 December and little on 26 December.
London Bridge
Thameslink core works between London Bridge and St Pancras are a fixture of the New Year weekend.

The full ranking is on London stations at Christmas, best and worst.

Rail-replacement buses: why they add an hour

A replacement bus does not leave until it is full or its scheduled time, takes the road route with all the stops, and connects to a train that may itself be on a reduced timetable. Paddington to Heathrow by bus-plus-train is regularly 90 minutes against 15 on the Express. With luggage, children and a check-in deadline, that margin is the difference between making the flight and not.

From-prices as published on our airport pages. Your exact fare is fixed when you book — the price on the confirmation is the price you pay, whatever the traffic or the date. Postcode zone charges may apply for City, Bloomsbury and King's Cross addresses.

Every airport transfer is flight-tracked in the inbound direction and timed back from check-in in the outbound direction. The works do not affect the road.
