Flying on New Year's Day: the engineering works and the fixed-fare alternative
The first departures of the year leave Heathrow at 06:00. The first trains do not, and 1 January is one of the heaviest engineering-works days on the network, with bank-holiday timetables, later starts and closed lines into Paddington, Euston and London Bridge in recent years. If you are flying on New Year's Day, a fixed-fare, flight-tracked car is the plan that does not depend on Network Rail.
1 January 2027 rail picture (works, reduced timetables) — updated from Network Rail
New Year's Day is a bank holiday, so every operator runs at most a Sunday-style timetable with a late start — typically no trains before 07:00 or 08:00. On top of that, Network Rail uses the Christmas–New Year window for its biggest engineering blocks of the year, and the London ends of the Great Western, West Coast and Thameslink routes are regular casualties. Network Rail publishes the full list in October or November; our engineering works page tracks every London closure weekly from then.
Heathrow Express / Elizabeth line / Gatwick Express / Stansted Express status
| Airport rail link | Sunday 1 Jan 2027 (bank holiday) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Heathrow Express | Reduced, late start — confirm | Paddington works have closed it entirely in some years |
| Elizabeth line to Heathrow | Reduced — confirm | Late first trains |
| Piccadilly line | Sunday service; no Night Tube on 1 Jan night | First trains after 06:00 |
| Gatwick Express / Southern / Thameslink | Reduced — confirm | Thameslink core works are common over New Year |
| Stansted Express | Reduced — confirm | Late start; useless for the 06:00 Ryanair wave |
| Thameslink / EMR to Luton | Reduced — confirm | DART hours reduced |
| DLR to London City | Sunday service | London City has very few 1 Jan flights |
Updated as operators publish New Year timetables (late November onwards).
Early flights on 1 January after NYE: the 4am pickup
The classic booking: a night out on New Year's Eve and a 07:00 flight on New Year's Day. We collect at 04:00 or 04:30 from wherever the night ended — the roads are clear once the closures lift and the run to Heathrow is 30 minutes. Book the NYE pickup and the airport run together and both are fixed-price; see the New Year's Eve taxi page.

Sunday 3 January and Monday 4 January: the return peak
The weekend of 2–3 January 2027 and Monday 4 January bring everyone home at once, into airports whose rail links may still be under engineering possession. Inbound transfers are flight-tracked with 60 minutes' free waiting after landing; book the return at the same time as the outbound and the price is fixed for both.
- Quote and book online at any hour — the fare is fixed at the moment you confirm.
- Driver details (name, vehicle, registration, direct mobile) arrive the day before.
- Flight tracking on every airport pickup: if your flight is early or late, the pickup moves with it at no charge, with 60 minutes' free waiting after landing.
- Pay by card when you book. No cash, no meter, no surge.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Heathrow Express running on New Year's Day?
- Usually a reduced service with a late start, but Paddington engineering works have closed it entirely in some years. Check our engineering works page in December; a pre-booked car does not depend on it.
- What time do trains start on New Year's Day?
- Bank-holiday timetables generally mean no trains before 07:00–08:00, later on some routes. For a 06:00–08:00 departure the railway is not an option.
- Do you run on New Year's Day?
- Yes, 24 hours, to and from every London airport, at fixed fares confirmed when you book.
- Is the fare really fixed over Christmas and New Year?
- Yes. The price you see when you confirm the booking is the price you pay. It does not change with traffic, weather, flight delays or the date. What you may see is a different from-price for the peak days than for a Tuesday in March — that is set when you get your quote, not added afterwards.
- How far ahead should I book?
- For 24, 25, 26 and 31 December and 1 January we allocate a fixed number of vehicles and drivers, and once they are gone we cannot add more. Book by 20 December for Christmas and by 15 December for New Year's Eve to be safe; we will always try to help later than that, but cannot guarantee it.
- Can I book by phone or WhatsApp?
- Yes — call +44 20 8888 9988 or use the contact page. Online booking gives you an instant fixed fare and is the quickest route on busy days.
