Christmas and New Year sailings from Southampton: the transfer when the trains don't run

A Christmas or New Year sailing from Southampton is one of the great ways to spend the holiday, and the transfer is the only part that needs thought: on Christmas Day and Boxing Day there is no train from London or Heathrow at all, and the days around them are engineering-works territory on the Waterloo line. A fixed-fare car from the airport or your London hotel to the terminal door, timed to check-in, is the simple version.

Christmas and New Year sailing dates

P&O Cruises, Cunard, MSC, Royal Caribbean and others operate Christmas and New Year departures from Southampton — typically sailing between 18 and 23 December for Christmas at sea, and 27–30 December for New Year itineraries, with returns in early January. Embarkation is usually from around 11:00 with a check-in closure two hours or so before departure. Confirm your line's times on the ticket; our embarkation timing guide covers the general timing rules.

Luggage and party sizes

Cruise passengers travel heavy. Two people with four large cases is an MPV, not a saloon; a family of four with the Christmas presents is an 8-seater. Tell us the case count when you book and we will size the vehicle. Our cruise luggage guide has the detail.

Timing backwards from check-in closure

Give us the ship, the sailing time and the check-in window and we suggest a pickup time with a margin for the M3 and M27. On Christmas Day and Boxing Day the roads are empty and the run from Heathrow is under ninety minutes; between 27 and 30 December they are busier. Disembarkation pickups in early January are timed to the ship's schedule with the driver waiting at the terminal. See fly-cruise transfers and Heathrow to Southampton embarkation for US visitors.
