Landing in London for Christmas 2026: what US, Canadian and European visitors need to know
If you are flying into London for Christmas from the US, Canada or Europe, there are three things the guidebooks skip: the whole city's public transport stops for a day and a half from Christmas Eve night; most things are closed on the 25th; and the trains to the airport are under engineering works for much of the week after. None of it is a problem if you know before you land. Here is what to sort out before you fly and what to expect when you arrive.
Before you fly: ETA, currency, phone
- UK ETA. Visitors from the US, Canada, Australia and EU/EEA countries need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before boarding. Apply on the official UK government app; it is usually approved within days but apply at least a week ahead in December. Our UK ETA and border guide has the detail.

- Phone. An eSIM bought before you fly is cheapest; airport SIM kiosks are closed on 25 December.
- The airport transfer. Book it before you fly, especially for 24–26 December and 1 January, and give us the flight number so it is tracked.

Christmas Day and Boxing Day survival
Book Christmas lunch now — hotels and the few open restaurants fill by early December. Plan the 25th around walking: the parks, the river, a pub at noon. Do not plan on the Tube on the 25th; do not plan on National Rail on the 26th. If you want to be somewhere specific — a service at St Paul's, lunch in Richmond — pre-book the car. Departing 27 December – 2 January: works and early flights
The week after Christmas is Network Rail's biggest engineering window; Paddington (Heathrow Express) and Euston have closed for several days in recent years. Morning transatlantic departures from Heathrow need a 06:00–07:00 pickup from central London, before the trains start on bank holidays.
