London New Year's Eve fireworks 2026: how to get there, and how to actually get home
The fireworks over the London Eye last about twelve minutes. Getting out of Westminster afterwards takes an hour and a quarter if you know what you are doing, and a lot longer if you don't. This is the transport side of London's New Year's Eve: how the ticketing works, where the roads close, what the Tube does, and where a pre-booked car can actually reach you.
Fireworks 2026: ticketing, viewing areas, entry times
London's New Year's Eve fireworks are organised by the Mayor of London and are ticket-only. Tickets are sold in tranches from late September or October through london.gov.uk (a small admin charge per ticket), with a final release usually in early December; they sell out. Viewing areas run along Victoria Embankment, the South Bank and Waterloo Bridge, each with its own colour-coded entrance. Gates open in the early evening (recent years: from around 20:00), and organisers advise arriving before 22:00 because areas lock once full. Once inside, there is no re-entry.

Road closures map and times
Vehicle restrictions begin at 14:00 on 31 December (with contingency closures from midday) and run until around 06:00 on 1 January. The closed area covers Westminster, Whitehall, Victoria Embankment, Westminster Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, Lambeth Bridge, the South Bank from Lambeth to Blackfriars, and streets around Trafalgar Square and the Strand. Installation work also closes Horse Guards Avenue and parts of the Embankment from 27 December. Tube and rail on the night
The Tube runs all night on New Year's Eve, and TfL has in recent years made travel free from around 23:45 to 04:30 — the arrangement is confirmed each December. Westminster, Embankment and Charing Cross stations close for the event; Waterloo, Victoria, Green Park, Oxford Circus and London Bridge become the exits, with queuing systems outside. Many National Rail operators run late trains from the terminals; most stop somewhere between 01:00 and 03:00.
The exit problem: 00:15 to 01:30
At 00:12 the fireworks end and roughly a hundred thousand people in the viewing areas, plus everyone else in the West End, start moving at once. Stewards release areas in sequence; the walk to Waterloo or Victoria is slow; the station queues are then 30–60 minutes. Apps show surge multipliers of several times normal and drivers cannot get within a mile of you. Plan for an hour and a quarter between the last firework and sitting in anything with wheels — and make that thing a car that was already booked.

Alternatives: Primrose Hill, Greenwich, Alexandra Palace, hotel views
If you do not have a ticket, the best free vantage points are the high ground: Primrose Hill (very busy), Parliament Hill, Alexandra Palace and Greenwich Park. Several riverside hotels and restaurants sell dinner-and-view packages that keep you indoors and inside the zone; for those, pickup after the event is at the nearest reachable point we agree in advance.
