Christmas at Kew 2026: getting to and from the light trail without the Kew Bridge queue

Kew's light trail ends at 10pm, in a residential corner of west London where the pre-bookable parking is limited, the District line station is small and the last sensible trains from Kew Bridge are not much later. A fixed-fare car from central London, Richmond or Heathrow — booked for your entry slot and for the walk-out afterwards — removes the only stressful part of the evening.

Dates and timed entry

Christmas at Kew 2026 runs from Friday 13 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. It is open 16:20 to 22:00, closed on Thursday 25 December, and finishes at 21:00 on Christmas Eve. Entry is by advance booking only, with a timed slot chosen at purchase. Last entry depends on the gate: Brentford Gate 19:00, Elizabeth Gate 19:20, Victoria Gate 20:00 (all an hour earlier on 24 December). Allow about two hours for the trail.

Kew Gardens vs Kew Bridge stations after 9pm

Kew Gardens (District line and Overground) is a five-minute walk from Victoria Gate and is where most people head at 22:00 — with a queue to match. Kew Bridge (South Western Railway to Waterloo) is a fifteen-minute walk over the river from Elizabeth Gate, with a thin late-evening service and none at all on Boxing Day or Christmas Day. Between Christmas and New Year, check for engineering works on both before relying on them.

Parking: limited and pre-book

Kew's own car park by Brentford Gate is small and must be pre-booked with the ticket; it sells out for peak evenings weeks ahead. Street parking in Kew is residents-only in the evenings on many roads and the enforcement is thorough. If you were planning to drive, a fixed-fare car is often the cheaper option once you add parking and the walk.

Families and Heathrow arrivals

A first evening in London straight from a Heathrow arrival — Kew is 25 minutes from the terminals and on the way into town — is a popular booking for visiting families. Child seats on request, MPVs for pushchairs and luggage, and the return leg to the hotel booked at the same fixed price. See family airport transfers at Christmas.
