Boxing Day 2026 at London's airports: what runs, what doesn't, and the fixed fare to get there
Boxing Day is one of the busiest departure days of the winter — ski flights, post-Christmas sun, families heading home — and in 2026 it falls on a Saturday, the one combination where most of the railway simply does not run. The Tube operates a Sunday-level service. A pre-booked fixed-fare car is the dependable way to reach the airport.
Boxing Day 2026 is a Saturday (bank holiday moved to Monday 28 December)
Because 26 December 2026 falls on a Saturday, the Boxing Day bank holiday is observed on Monday 28 December. That matters for transport in two ways. First, the railway treats Saturday 26 December as Boxing Day regardless of the calendar: most train operators run no service at all, and the few that do run a skeleton. Second, Monday 28 December is a bank holiday with a mostly normal Sunday-plus timetable — but it sits inside the Christmas engineering-works window, so lines into Paddington, Euston, Liverpool Street and London Bridge may be disrupted.
Airports, meanwhile, run a near-normal Boxing Day schedule. Stansted's early-morning Ryanair wave, Gatwick's ski and Canaries departures and Heathrow's transatlantic bank all go on 26 December.

Tube and Overground: Sunday-level service, no Night Tube
TfL typically runs a reduced, roughly Sunday-pattern service on Boxing Day. First trains are later than on a weekday — a problem for a 06:30 flight from Stansted or Luton, where the rail leg would not get you there in time even where it runs. There is no Night Tube on 25/26 December.

Monday 28 December substitute holiday: normal trains, but engineering works
By Monday 28 December the railway is back on a bank-holiday timetable, but this is the heart of the Christmas engineering-works period. In recent years Paddington (Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line), Euston and parts of the Thameslink core have closed for several days between Christmas and New Year. Check the works tracker before assuming the train, and remember that rail-replacement buses to an airport with luggage add an hour and a lot of stress.

- Are there trains to Heathrow on Boxing Day 2026?
- Possibly a reduced Heathrow Express or Elizabeth line service, but this is confirmed by the operators only in late November. Most National Rail operators run nothing on Boxing Day. A pre-booked car does not depend on the answer.
- Is Gatwick Express running on Boxing Day?
- Gatwick Express has not run a full service on recent Boxing Days; Southern and Thameslink have run limited services. We update our table when GTR publishes the 2026 timetable.
- Is Boxing Day 2026 a bank holiday?
- The bank holiday is observed on Monday 28 December 2026 because 26 December falls on a Saturday. Transport operators still treat Saturday 26 December as Boxing Day.
- Is the Tube running on Boxing Day?
- Yes, on a reduced Sunday-level service with later first trains. There is no Night Tube.
- Is the fare really fixed over Christmas and New Year?
