Stansted Express and Luton trains over Christmas 2026: day by day, plus the road alternative

Stansted and Luton are the low-cost airports, which means early flights — the 06:00–07:30 Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz waves — and passengers who planned on the train. Over Christmas the Stansted Express finishes early on the 24th, runs nothing on the 25th and starts late on Boxing Day and New Year's Day; Thameslink to Luton and the DART follow a similar pattern. Here is the day-by-day picture and the fixed-fare road alternative.

Greater Anglia, Thameslink and EMR publish Christmas timetables in late November; the DART publishes its hours separately. Updated from those.

Liverpool Street and Tottenham Hale works

Stansted Express services are diverted to start from Tottenham Hale or Stratford during Liverpool Street engineering works, which have been a feature of several recent Christmases. The diversion adds a Tube or Overground leg to a journey that already takes 50 minutes, with reduced frequencies. Confirmed dates go on the engineering works page.

Luton DART hours

The DART shuttle between Luton Airport Parkway and the terminal runs from early morning to late evening on normal days, with reduced hours on bank holidays and no service on Christmas Day. Even when it runs, it only helps if the Thameslink or EMR train to Parkway is running — and on 26 December and 1 January that is not guaranteed.

Early Ryanair and easyJet departures on 26–27 December

Boxing Day and 27 December carry a full programme of early low-cost departures to the sun and the slopes. On Saturday 26 December the first Stansted Express is later than the check-in closure for the 06:00–07:00 wave, and Thameslink's first trains to Luton are similar. From central London a fixed-fare car leaves at 03:30–04:00 and takes about an hour on empty roads.

No. No trains serve Stansted on 25 December.
Is there a train to Luton Airport on Boxing Day 2026?
Thameslink has run a limited Boxing Day service in recent years and EMR none; the DART runs reduced hours. Confirmed 2026 arrangements appear here in late November.
What time does the first Stansted Express run on Boxing Day?
Later than on a weekday — typically not early enough for a 06:00–07:00 departure. A pre-booked car from central London leaves at 03:30–04:00 for those flights.
