London's terminals at Christmas 2026, ranked from most reliable to most closed
Not all London terminals have an equal Christmas. Some barely notice the engineering programme; some close for the best part of a week. This ranking scores each of the twelve on expected closure days over 24 December – 4 January, lines affected and which airports it cuts you off from — provisional until Network Rail confirms the 2026/27 programme, then updated weekly.

The worst three and why
- Paddington
- Old Oak Common (HS2 interchange) and Elizabeth line works have closed the Great Western main line into Paddington over several recent Christmases, taking Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth line to Heathrow with it. Heathrow's rail link is then the Piccadilly line or nothing.
- Euston
- HS2 construction has made Euston a regular Christmas closure, with no West Coast services and buses from Milton Keynes.
- Liverpool Street
- Works on the Great Eastern and the Lea Valley divert Stansted Express to Tottenham Hale or Stratford, and Boxing Day services out of Liverpool Street are minimal.
The best three
Marylebone (Chiltern runs a relatively normal programme and has few Christmas works), Fenchurch Street (c2c, similarly quiet) and Waterloo (South Western Railway tends to schedule its big possessions at other times). All three still close completely on Christmas Day, and all three run little or nothing on Boxing Day.
Airport implications
The ranking maps onto the airports directly: Heathrow (Paddington) and Stansted (Liverpool Street) are the most exposed to Christmas works; Gatwick and Luton depend on Victoria, London Bridge and St Pancras, which are middling; London City (DLR) and Southend (Fenchurch Street/Liverpool Street) are affected mainly by Boxing Day reductions. Day-by-day airport-line detail is on the engineering works page.
