Oyster card, contactless or a taxi? What London transport actually costs a visitor in 2026
Most visitors do not need an Oyster card any more: a contactless bank card or phone pays exactly the same fares and caps automatically. What they do need is the arithmetic — the 2026 daily cap, the fact that Heathrow journeys are always charged at peak, and the point at which three people with suitcases pay less for a fixed-fare car than for three sets of Tube fares and a walk from the station.
Oyster vs contactless: same fares, one difference
Since 2014 a contactless card or phone (Apple Pay, Google Pay) is charged identical adult fares and daily caps to an Oyster card, so most visitors should simply tap in and out with the card they already own. Oyster still makes sense for children (under-11s travel free with an adult; 11–15s need a Zip card or Young Visitor discount loaded onto an Oyster) and for anyone whose bank charges foreign-transaction fees per tap. The Heathrow peak-fare trap and the luggage problem
Heathrow-to-central-London Tube journeys are charged at the peak rate at all times, and the Piccadilly line takes 50–60 minutes with no luggage racks. Where a car is the sensible choice on a visitor's trip
- Airport arrival with luggage, especially with children or after a long-haul flight — Heathrow meet-and-greet guide.

How to pay on the Tube as a visitor: quick rules
- Tap the same card in and out, every time. Tapping different cards or a card and a phone will charge two maximum fares.
- Caps are per card per day, so a family tapping one card for two people is not allowed — each person needs their own card.
- Children under 11 travel free with a paying adult; 11–15s get half fares only with a Zip Oyster or a Young Visitor discount, arranged at a Tube station ticket office or Visitor Centre.
- Contactless is not accepted on Heathrow Express (buy a ticket) or on Chiltern to Bicester Village.
- Quote and book online at any hour — the fare is fixed at the moment you confirm.
- Driver details (name, vehicle, registration, direct mobile) arrive the day before.
- Flight tracking on every airport pickup: if your flight is early or late, the pickup moves with it at no charge, with 60 minutes' free waiting after landing.
- Pay by card when you book. No cash, no meter, no surge.
