Heathrow layover guide: what you can really see in 4, 6 or 8 hours, with a private driver who brings you back on time
A Heathrow layover is only wasted if you spend it in the terminal. Windsor Castle is 25 minutes away, Kew Gardens 30, Westminster 45. The rule is simple: be back at the terminal three hours before a long-haul departure (two for short-haul), and let the driver, not the Tube, control the timing. Here is what fits in four, six and eight hours, with fixed prices.
First, the arithmetic
Count from scheduled landing: 45–60 minutes to clear immigration and (if you have it) collect bags; the tour; then be at the departure terminal 3 hours before a long-haul flight, 2 hours for short-haul. A 6-hour layover therefore gives about two hours out; an 8-hour layover gives four. Why a driver rather than the Tube for a layover
- The Piccadilly line to central London is 50–60 minutes each way; that alone eats two hours of a six-hour layover.
- The driver tracks your inbound flight, meets you in arrivals and keeps the bags in the car.
- Return timing is fixed to your departure terminal, not to a timetable.
- Terminal changes (land at T3, depart T5) are handled without the inter-terminal bus.
