The complete guide for parents — what UK law actually says about children in taxis, which seat fits which child, whether to bring your own seat or use ours, and how RushXO fits the correct infant carrier, child seat or booster free of charge on every transfer at Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Luton and London City — installed before the car reaches your door or the arrivals hall.
The Short Answer
Not always — and this surprises most parents. Licensed taxis and private hire vehicles have a specific exemption in UK law: if the driver doesn't provide the correct child car seat, a child may travel without one, as long as they sit in the rear — children aged 3 and over must wear the adult seat belt, and children under 3 may legally travel unrestrained in the rear. The exemption exists for practicality, not because it's safe: an adult belt sits wrongly on a small body, and a lap is not a restraint. Our position is simple — the exemption should never need to be used. Request seats at booking and RushXO fits the correct infant carrier, child seat or booster free, in every vehicle class, at every London airport.
On this page: the law in plain English, which seat for which child, bring your own vs use ours, how booking works and parents' questions answered.
The Law, Plainly
In a private car, the rule is strict: a child must use an appropriate child car seat until they turn 12 or reach 135cm tall, whichever comes first. In a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle, the exemption below applies — worth knowing, so you can also judge any operator you ride with anywhere.
| Child | Private car (the rule) | Licensed taxi/PHV (the exemption) | The RushXO standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 3 | Correct child seat, always — no exceptions | May travel unrestrained, rear seats only, if no seat provided | Infant carrier or child seat, fitted, free |
| 3 to 11 (under 135cm) | Correct child seat or booster required | Adult seat belt, rear seats only, if no seat provided | Child seat or high-back booster, fitted, free |
| 12+, or 135cm+ | Adult seat belt | Adult seat belt | Adult seat belt — booster still available on request |
Front seats are never part of the exemption — a child travelling without a correct seat must be in the rear. Newer seats sold in the UK follow the height-based i-Size (R129) standard, which also requires babies to travel rear-facing until at least 15 months; older weight-based R44 seats remain legal to use. This page is a plain-English summary, not legal advice — the definitive rules are on GOV.UK.
Which Seat?
Seats are matched by height and weight, with age as the shortcut. When you book, give each child's age and — if you know them — weight or height, and dispatch stocks the car accordingly. If a child sits on a boundary, we bring both options and the driver fits whichever suits on the day.
Rear-facing is non-negotiable for babies — it supports the head and neck, and under i-Size it's required until at least 15 months. Ours fits belt or ISOFIX; your own carrier off the flight fits just as well.
A five-point harness holds a toddler properly where an adult belt cannot. Fitted and tension-checked by the driver before the car sets off — not adjusted hopefully on a forecourt.
Raises the child so the adult belt crosses shoulder and hips, not neck and stomach — with side wings for sleeping heads on the motorway. We stock high-back rather than backless boosters as standard, because they protect better.
On the boundaries: a tall 3-year-old may be better in a harnessed seat than an early booster; a small 5-year-old should stay harnessed longer. The height and weight limits win over the age label every time — mention any borderline child at booking and we'll bring both.
Yours or Ours?
There's no single right answer — it depends on whether you need a seat at the destination. Both work with us: the driver fits whichever seat travels, yours or ours, before setting off.
Hire car with seats included, city trip on foot and transit, or visiting family with a seat waiting — travel light, carry nothing extra through security, and the same seats are waiting for the arrivals pickup on the way home.
Most airlines carry a car seat and a folded pram free for a child, checked at bag drop or, often, at the gate. Your own seat also means familiar fit abroad and no hire-car seat roulette. A padded travel bag protects it in the hold.
Belt-routed or ISOFIX, ours or yours — installed and checked before departure, not left to a bleary 4am parent on the driveway. Tell us at booking which seats are travelling and which are ours.
Flying with a toddler on your lap vs their own aircraft seat is the other half of this decision — many parents buy the child a seat and use an aircraft-approved car seat on board. Check your airline's rules for approved models; whichever you choose, the ground legs at both ends are covered here.
How It Works
Ages, plus weight or height if known, for each child — online, on WhatsApp or on 02088889988. "Two kids" books two belts; "a 1-year-old at 10kg and a 6-year-old" books the right seats.
The correct carrier, seat or booster — ISOFIX where requested — is assigned with the vehicle. Borderline sizes get both options loaded.
Home pickup: seats installed before the car reaches your door. Arrivals pickup: installed before you land, so you walk from the name board to a ready car.
Your seat configuration is saved to the booking — the way home, weeks later, gets the identical setup without re-explaining anything from a departure lounge.
Seats fit every vehicle class — saloon, estate, MPV, V-Class and 8-seater — without reducing stated luggage capacity. Three or more seats? See the FAQ below on three-across.
Why RushXO
Most operators treat child seats as an upsell, an "on request, subject to availability" footnote, or someone else's problem under the exemption. We treat them as part of carrying a family properly — the same way the luggage help and the name board are.
A Transport for London Private Hire Operator with directly contracted drivers — the seat policy is company standard, not driver's choice.
No per-seat fee, no "premium family vehicle" markup — the fixed fare for the route is the fare, with the seats in it.
Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Luton and London City — departures from home and arrivals meet-and-greet, same policy everywhere.
Installation is the driver's job and checked before departure — parents supervise, they don't wrestle.
Rear-facing carriers for the under-15-month rule, harnessed seats, high-back boosters — matched to current standards, not a dusty one-size booster in the boot.

FAQ
Legally, yes — under the licensed taxi/PHV exemption, if no correct seat is provided: rear seats only, with the adult belt from age 3, and under-3s may ride unrestrained in the rear. Legal is not the same as safe, which is why our seats are free — the exemption should never need using.
In the rear of a licensed taxi it's within the exemption for an under-3 — and strongly discouraged. In any sudden stop an adult cannot hold onto a child. Request an infant carrier at booking; it costs nothing and it's fitted before pickup.
No — every seat type, in every vehicle class, at every airport, free. Your fixed fare doesn't change because children are travelling properly.
Our MPVs, V-Class and most saloons have rear ISOFIX points, and we stock both ISOFIX and belt-fitted seats. If ISOFIX is essential — for your own base, say — mention it at booking and dispatch assigns a confirmed-ISOFIX vehicle.
Rarely in a saloon — three full seats seldom fit a standard bench. Three or more children in seats means an MPV, V-Class or 8-seater, where each seat gets a full-size position. Tell us all the ages and we assign the right vehicle.
Until at least 15 months under the i-Size standard — and longer is better where the seat's height/weight limits allow, as rear-facing protects the head and neck best. Our infant carriers are rear-facing; tell us your preference for a child near the boundary.
Yes — the driver fits it, belt-routed or ISOFIX, before setting off. Common on airport runs when the seat is flying with you: most airlines carry a car seat and folded pram free for a child.
We stock high-back boosters as standard because they position the belt better and protect the head and torso in side impacts. Backless cushions remain legal for older/taller children, but high-back is what goes in the car unless you ask otherwise.
Identically — Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted, Luton and London City, both directions. Start from the Gatwick family pickups page, the taxi to Gatwick with kids page, or any airport hub.
