Southend is the airport nobody complains about, largely because there is not enough of it to complain about. One small terminal. One baggage belt. A security hall you can often walk through without breaking stride. If you have spent an hour in a Stansted queue at five in the morning, SEN is a small revelation — and the reason a certain kind of traveller will pay a little more for the flight to leave from here instead.

RushXO runs Southend on one fixed taxi fare, agreed before you travel and unchanged afterwards. The fare covers the vehicle, not the seat, and includes the drop-off charge, the Dartford Crossing if your route uses it, the parking your driver uses to meet you and the waiting time after you land. It is also a run we know well — our base is in Dartford, roughly forty-five minutes away across the A13. Book online at rushxo.com/rushxo-booking, call "020 8888 9988", or WhatsApp +44 7466 237870.

Straight answer

Do You Even Need a Taxi to Southend?

We would rather tell you the truth than sell you a car you do not need.

The honest bit

Southend Airport has its own railway station about a hundred metres from the terminal door. Not a shuttle. Not a park-and-ride. A platform you can see from the entrance. It is the best rail connection of any small airport in the country, and if you are one person travelling from Liverpool Street with a cabin bag, you should probably take the train. It is cheap, it is direct and it drops you at the door.

So here is where a car actually earns its fare, and where it does not.

Take the car if…

You are coming from Kent, south-east London or anywhere off the Liverpool Street line. You have hold luggage, a pushchair or golf clubs. There are three or more of you. Your flight leaves before the first train or lands after the last. You are collecting someone and want them met properly rather than texted a platform number.

Kent & SE LondonHold luggageGroups of 3+Early/late flights

Take the train if…

You are solo, travelling from Liverpool Street or Stratford, carrying only a cabin bag, and flying at a civilised hour. It is roughly an hour, it costs a fraction of a car, and it stops at the terminal. We are not going to pretend otherwise just because this is a taxi page.

SoloHand luggageOn the lineDaytime flight

Most of our Southend work comes from the first column — Kent, Essex outside the rail corridor, families, and groups. If you fall into the second column, take the train with our blessing, and come back to us when you are flying at 05:30 or travelling with the in-laws.

How the Arrival Works at a Very Small Airport

There is not much to it, which is the point.

1

We watch the flight

Your flight number is loaded at booking and tracked from departure. Southend's schedule is leaner than the big airports', so a delay tends to be a real one — and it simply moves your pickup at no cost.

2

Driver waits inside

One terminal, one arrivals door, one place to stand. Your driver is inside with a name board before you have collected your bag. The short-stay parking is our cost, not yours.

3

Out in fifteen minutes

Southend's single baggage belt and small immigration hall mean most passengers are through and out faster than they can order a coffee. The sixty free minutes are a cushion you will almost never need here.

4

Bags to the car

The walk from arrivals to the car park is measured in metres, not corridors. Trolley taken, cases loaded, moving.

5

Every toll covered

From Kent the route is the Dartford Crossing then the A13 or A127. The Dart Charge is in your quote. So is the airport drop-off fee. We do not add either afterwards.

6

Fixed fare, paid your way

Pay online at booking or by card in the car. No meter, no adjustment, no surge — the same number at 05:00 as at 15:00.

Who books us

Who We Run to Southend

SEN traffic is a particular mix, and it is not the same mix as Stansted or Luton.

🏖 Essex & the seafront

Southend-on-Sea, Leigh, Westcliff, Shoeburyness, Rochford, Rayleigh — the airport is on the town's doorstep and the runs are short. Ten to twenty minutes, fixed fare, met properly at the other end.

🛣 Kent, via the Crossing

Our home ground. From Dartford, Gravesend, Bexley or the Medway towns, SEN is forty to sixty-five minutes across the Crossing and out on the A13. The Dart Charge is in the fare and the route is one we drive every week.

👶 Families who chose SEN on purpose

Plenty of people fly from Southend specifically because a small terminal with a two-minute security queue is easier with young children than a cavernous one. Free child seats fitted before we set off, pushchair in the boot, no drama.

🏌 Golf, sport & awkward luggage

Clubs, bikes, dive gear, instruments — things you genuinely cannot carry onto a Liverpool Street train at rush hour. An MPV or 8–9 seat vehicle takes the kit and the people together on one fare.

💼 Business & private aviation

Southend handles business aviation as well as scheduled flights, and those passengers want an executive car, a named suited driver and a VAT receipt — not a rail replacement bus. Account billing available.

Connections to the bigger airports

Flying into SEN and out of Stansted, Gatwick or Heathrow? Fixed fare, both flights tracked, and a realistic margin built into the crossing rather than a best-case guess at the M25.

Timing & roads

When to Leave for Southend

Southend is short-haul and the terminal is small, so two hours before departure is the working rule and it is usually generous. Many passengers are through check-in and security in twenty minutes. We still plan on the two-hour basis, because being early at Southend costs you a coffee, not a flight.

The A127 and the A13

Everything into Southend arrives on one of two roads. The A127 is the direct run from the M25 at Junction 29 and it is the one that clogs — slow eastbound on Friday evenings and westbound on weekday mornings, particularly around Basildon. The A13 is the alternative and the natural line from Kent once you are over the Dartford Crossing. Your driver picks between them on the day, live, rather than committing in advance.

The Dartford Crossing

From our side of the river the Crossing is the gateway, and it has moods. It is worst northbound in the morning peak and around incidents, and there is no realistic alternative short of the Blackwall Tunnel and a long detour through east London. We build the real number into the pickup time and the Dart Charge into the fare.

Summer weekends

Southend-on-Sea is a seaside town and the roads behave like it in July and August. A sunny Saturday puts day-trippers on the same A127 you are trying to use, and the airport run gets slower for reasons that have nothing to do with the airport. We account for it rather than being surprised by it.

About RushXO Southend Transfers

Southend is one of the runs we know best, because we are based in Dartford and the A13 across the Crossing is a road our drivers use constantly. One fixed taxi fare agreed at booking, a TfL-licensed and enhanced-DBS-checked driver whose name you have before the day, and a clean recent-model car. The Dart Charge and the airport drop-off fee are absorbed into the quote rather than presented afterwards.

We will also tell you plainly when the train is the better option, because a customer who takes the train today and books us for the family trip in August is worth more than one we talked into a fare they did not need. Child seats are free on request. Accessible and step-free vehicles can be arranged in advance subject to availability. Returns are set on the same fixed-fare basis with the inbound flight tracked automatically.

Our entire model rests on one promise: the fixed fare quoted at booking is the fare you pay, every time. Learn more at www.rushxo.com, or browse the full airport transfer hub.

Frequently asked

Southend Airport Taxi — Your Questions

How much is a taxi to Southend Airport?
RushXO Southend fares start from £30 in a saloon and are quoted as one fixed price for the whole vehicle, not per person. The drop-off charge and any tolls, including the Dartford Crossing where the route uses it, are included. Southend-on-Sea and Rochford pickups are the shortest runs; Chelmsford, Basildon and east London are priced on distance. Send us your postcode for the exact fare.
How small is Southend Airport, really?
Very. It is the smallest of the London-labelled airports by a wide margin — a single terminal you can cross in a couple of minutes, one baggage belt, and a security hall that on a quiet day you walk straight through. That is genuinely its best feature. Most arriving passengers are out of the building within fifteen minutes of landing.
Is the train station really at the terminal?
Yes — Southend Airport station sits roughly a hundred metres from the terminal door, which makes it the best-connected small airport in the country by rail. That is worth being honest about: if you are travelling alone from Liverpool Street with hand luggage, the train is a perfectly good option. A car earns its fare when you are carrying bags, travelling as a group, going somewhere the line does not, or flying at an hour the timetable does not cover.
How early should I arrive at Southend Airport?
Two hours before departure is the standard advice and it is usually more than enough, because the terminal is small and processes quickly. In practice many passengers clear check-in and security in twenty minutes. We still plan the collection on the two-hour basis — being early at Southend costs you a coffee, not a flight.
Where does the driver meet me at Southend arrivals?
One terminal, one arrivals door. Your driver parks in the short stay and meets you inside with a name board. Because the building is so compact there is no ambiguity about where to stand and no long walk to the car. The parking cost is included in your fixed fare.
Which airlines fly from Southend?
Southend's route network has changed a good deal in recent years and is smaller than it was at its peak, with easyJet historically the main operator and a rotating set of leisure and charter routes. Always check what is actually flying before you plan around it. Whatever is scheduled, we run the transfer — the airport being quiet does not change the fixed fare.
Is the Southend drop-off charge included?
Yes. Southend charges vehicles using the terminal drop-off area, and that fee is already inside your quoted fare, along with any tolls on the route. Southend is far outside the ULEZ zone, so there is no ULEZ charge at the airport end. There is nothing to settle on the day.
Do you cover the Dartford Crossing on Southend runs?
Yes, and the Dart Charge is included in the fixed fare. Coming from Kent, the crossing then the A13 or A127 is the natural route to Southend, and it is a run we do constantly from our Dartford base. We absorb the toll rather than adding it at the end.
How long do you wait if my flight is delayed?
We track your flight number from takeoff, so a delay moves the pickup automatically at no cost. After landing you get 60 minutes of free waiting time — which at Southend is a very generous cushion, since most passengers clear the terminal in fifteen minutes or less.
Can you take me from Southend to Stansted, Gatwick or Heathrow?
Yes. Every airport-to-airport route runs on a fixed fare with both flights tracked. Southend to Stansted is typically 50 to 75 minutes; Southend to Heathrow or Gatwick means crossing London or taking the M25 the long way, so we build a realistic margin into connection bookings rather than assuming a clear run.
Do you provide child seats for Southend transfers?
Yes, free of charge. Tell us the number and ages of your children when you book and the right infant seat, child seat or booster is fitted before your driver sets off. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before pickup.
