The short version
Stansted is a single-terminal, low-cost hub with early-morning peaks and a lot of Ryanair. Into London: the Stansted Express reaches Liverpool Street in ~47–50 min (via Tottenham Hale for the Victoria line); coaches are cheaper but slower. Driving is ~40 miles / 60–90 min. Mind the drop-off charge at the terminal — there's a free option at Mid Stay, or skip it with a door-to-door transfer.
Stansted Airport (STN) sits in Essex, north-east of London, and is the UK's biggest Ryanair base, with Jet2, easyJet, TUI and others too. It's a single terminal, so once you're through it's straightforward — the usual catch is the early-flight rush, when security and the roads get busy. Plan the timing and it's an easy airport to use.
Getting to & from London
- Train (fastest by rail): the Stansted Express runs direct to London Liverpool Street in about 47–50 minutes, stopping at Tottenham Hale (change for the Victoria line) and Stansted Mountfitchet. Trains run frequently through the day.
- Coach: National Express and others run to Victoria, Stratford and Liverpool Street, plus other routes — cheaper than the train, slower, and traffic-dependent.
- Taxi / private transfer: door-to-door by road, ~60–90 minutes to central London depending on traffic — no changes, straight to your address. Best for groups, early flights, lots of luggage or a tight schedule.
The Stansted Express
The Stansted Express is the quick rail link to central London, with the station right at the terminal — follow signs down to the platforms. Buy ahead online for the best fares, and note that Tottenham Hale is often the smart stop if you're heading to the West End or north London, as it connects to the Victoria line. Check the first and last trains if you're on a very early or late flight.
Parking & the drop-off charge
- Short stay: closest to the terminal, priciest — for quick collections.
- Mid stay: a short shuttle from the terminal, the usual value pick for a few days.
- Long stay: cheapest for a week or more, with a shuttle.
- Meet & greet / valet: hand the car over near the terminal at a premium.
Security & fast track
Stansted sells a fast track security lane, bookable ahead or on the day. With the airport's early-morning and holiday peaks it's a sensible buy when you're travelling at a busy slot or have a tight connection. Outside those times the standard lanes are usually fine. Check the current liquids and electronics rules for your departure before you pack.
Lounges
Stansted has paid lounges — such as the Escape lounge and similar — that anyone can pre-book regardless of airline or fare. Expect comfortable seating, drinks and snacks or a light buffet, and Wi-Fi, away from the busy concourse. For an early start, it's a calmer wait; book ahead in peak periods as space is limited.
Food, shops & practical tips
- Most food and shops are airside — grab what you need after security near the gates.
- Arrive early at peaks: 2–3 hours for a busy early or holiday departure is wise.
- Currency & SIMs: bureaux de change and the usual stores are airside.
- Gates can be a walk: allow time once your gate is called, some are a fair distance.
