Frequently asked

Heathrow — Common Questions

How many terminals does Heathrow have?
Heathrow has four passenger terminals in use: Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5. (Terminal 1 closed in 2015.) Terminal 2 is the Queen's Terminal, Terminal 5 is used mainly by British Airways, and your airline determines which terminal you use — always check your boarding pass, as the terminals are not all within walking distance of each other.
What's the cheapest way to get from Heathrow to central London?
The Piccadilly line Underground is the cheapest, at a flat fare from Heathrow into central London, taking around 45–60 minutes. The Elizabeth line is faster and runs through central London, while Heathrow Express is the quickest to Paddington at around 15 minutes. For door-to-door travel with luggage or a group, a fixed-fare taxi is often the most practical. See our Heathrow to London guide for a full comparison.
How early should I arrive at Heathrow?
As a general guide, arrive about 2 hours before a short-haul flight and 3 hours before long-haul, though you should always follow your airline's specific advice. Allow extra time during school holidays and peak periods, if you need special assistance, or if you're travelling with young children or pets.
Is there a change to Terminal 4 parking in 2026?
Yes. From 23 June 2026, the Terminal 4 multi-storey car park (used for Terminal Parking and Meet & Greet) closes for a major redevelopment, with all Terminal 4 passenger parking moving to Zone A of the Terminal 4 Park & Ride car park. If you're flying from Terminal 4, factor this into your plans — our parking guide has the details.
