The short version
Luton is small and quick to move through, but it's a budget-airline hub with brutal early-morning peaks. Into London: the DART people-mover links the terminal to Luton Airport Parkway in ~4 minutes, then a train to St Pancras (often under an hour). Driving is ~30–35 miles / 70–90 min. Watch the drop-off charge at the terminal — there's a free option further out, or skip it entirely with a door-to-door transfer.
Luton Airport (LTN) sits in Bedfordshire, north of London, and is the home of low-cost carriers like easyJet, Wizz Air, Ryanair and TUI. It's a single-terminal airport, so it's easy to navigate — the catch is timing: a huge share of flights leave at dawn, so the security queues and roads peak early. A little planning, and you breeze through.
Getting to & from London
- Train (fastest by rail): DART to Luton Airport Parkway, then Thameslink or East Midlands Railway to London St Pancras — roughly 30–50 minutes depending on the service. Thameslink also runs through central London to Farringdon, Blackfriars, London Bridge and Gatwick.
- Coach: National Express and Green Line run to Victoria and other stops, typically 1h–1h30, cheap but slower and traffic-dependent.
- Taxi / private transfer: door-to-door by road, ~70–90 minutes to central London depending on traffic — no DART, no changes, no dragging bags. Best for groups, early flights, lots of luggage or a tight schedule.
The DART & Parkway station
The Luton DART is an automated people-mover connecting the terminal directly to Luton Airport Parkway rail station in about 4 minutes — it replaced the old shuttle bus. You'll need a DART ticket (often sold bundled with your train ticket). Allow a few minutes to walk to the DART, ride it, and reach the platforms. If you're arriving late at night, check the last train and DART times, as they don't run 24 hours.
Parking & the drop-off charge
- Short stay: closest to the terminal, priciest — for quick collections.
- Mid stay: a short shuttle from the terminal, the usual value pick for a few days.
- Long stay: cheapest for a week or more, with a shuttle.
- Premium / Priority: park-and-walk options nearest the terminal at a premium.
Security & fast track
Luton sells a fast track security lane you can book ahead or on the day. Given those famous early peaks, it's genuinely worth it when you're flying at a busy slot or have a tight onward connection. Outside peak times the standard lanes move fine. Liquids and laptop rules apply as normal — check whether your departure still needs the 100ml limit, as it varies by what's installed.
Lounges
Luton has paid lounges — such as the Aspire lounge and Clubrooms — which anyone can pre-book regardless of airline or ticket. Expect seating away from the concourse, drinks, snacks or a light buffet, and Wi-Fi. For an early flight, a lounge is a calmer place to wait than the gate area; book ahead at peak times as they fill up.
Food, shops & practical tips
- Eat before security if you have time — landside choices exist, but most food is airside near the gates.
- Arrive early at dawn peaks: 2–3 hours for a busy early departure is sensible.
- Currency & SIMs: bureaux de change and the usual shops are airside.
- Families: the airport is compact, which helps with kids; check assistance options in advance if needed.
