Getting to the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama: the campus, the stations and a smooth arrival

Central is one of the world's great drama schools — the training ground of Laurence Olivier, Judi Dench and countless stars of stage and screen — set in the leafy creative quarter of Swiss Cottage in north London. Its campus sits right opposite the Tube, which makes arrival simple in theory; but move-in day with luggage, and audition day with nerves, both reward a plan. Here's how to reach the Embassy Theatre door calmly, whether you're a new student or a parent.

Founded in 1906 by Elsie Fogerty and a constituent college of the University of London since 2005, the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama — known to everyone simply as Central — offers Europe's most comprehensive range of specialist training in acting, theatre-making, design, stage management, technical arts, voice and beyond. Its past presidents read like a roll-call of British theatre: Olivier, Peggy Ashcroft, Judi Dench, Harold Pinter. Home to the 234-seat Embassy Theatre and five further performance spaces, it serves over 1,000 students in the heart of Swiss Cottage — and this guide covers exactly how to reach it.

01 / LOCATIONWhere exactly is Central?

Central's main campus is the Embassy Theatre, 64 Eton Avenue, Swiss Cottage, London NW3 3HY, in the London Borough of Camden — a leafy, artistic part of north London redeveloped as a civic and cultural quarter, with the Hampstead Theatre directly opposite. It's well connected but distinctly residential, on a quiet avenue where parking is limited. For arrivals, a clean drop-off at the campus entrance, rather than a park-and-stay, is the sensible approach.

02 / CAMPUSESSwiss Cottage and the Bankside studios

Central is largely a single-campus school, which keeps arrival straightforward:

Almost everything happens at Swiss Cottage; the Bankside studios are the exception. Central has no halls of its own, instead using University of London halls of residence — so on move-in day you may be heading to a hall elsewhere in central London. Check your details and tell us where you need to be.

03 / STATIONSNearest stations and getting around

Few campuses sit as close to a station as Central:

The Jubilee line runs straight into the West End, Bond Street and London Bridge. For getting around day to day, the links are excellent. The familiar catch applies on arrival day: easy with a backpack, far harder with a term's luggage and a change or two onto the Tube.

04 / AIRPORTSAirport transfer times to Central

Central is reachable from every London airport, but the journeys — and how relaxed they are with luggage — vary. The board below gives realistic door-to-door driving times for a pre-booked private hire car. Treat them as a planning guide; north London traffic has its own ideas.

From Heathrow

Heathrow is the gateway for most international students. By rail it means the Elizabeth or Piccadilly line and a change onto the Jubilee line for Swiss Cottage — workable travelling light. A direct Heathrow airport transfer by car removes the changes, with the driver meeting you in arrivals after baggage reclaim and taking you straight to Eton Avenue — welcome after a long flight.

From the other airports

London City lies to the east; Gatwick, Luton and Stansted sit further out. From each, the rail route ends in a Tube ride out to Swiss Cottage with bags; for a family or anyone with luggage, one car and one fixed price is the gentler option.

The campus is right by the Tube — but on luggage day, and on audition day, door-to-door is the calmer choice.

05 / MOVE-IN DAYArriving with luggage on move-in day

Because Central uses University of London halls rather than its own, move-in day often means a hall somewhere in central London as well as a first visit to Swiss Cottage. A pre-booked private hire transfer handles both cleanly: a car sized to the boxes and cases, a driver who knows the approach to Eton Avenue and to your hall, and a drop-off at the door rather than a haul across town on the Tube. With parking around the campus limited, a drop-and-go beats trying to park — choose an MPV if the family is helping and everyone arrives together for one fixed fare.

Why this helps specifically at Central: Eton Avenue is a residential street with limited parking, and your hall may be elsewhere in the city. A car booked to the exact address takes the right approach first time — and because the fare is fixed in advance, a few minutes at the kerb to unload costs nothing extra.

06 / VISITSAuditions, open days and graduation

For a drama school, audition day is the big one — a timed, high-stakes occasion where arriving calm and unflustered genuinely matters. Add open days, the performances in the Embassy Theatre, and graduation, and families come to Swiss Cottage all year, often from outside London. A pre-booked car means everyone arrives together at the door, with no circling and no rush-hour stress on a day when you'd rather be focused on the performance, not the parking.
