Gatwick to Heathrow — north and round
The shortest of the London airport-pair transfers, and the one most often booked as a same-day connection. Roughly 43 to 45 miles, all of it motorway, with the variable being the M25 rather than the mileage.
Timing it
Off-peak the drive is 50 to 60 minutes; ordinary daytime traffic makes it 60 to 80; weekday peaks between 07:00–09:00 and 15:00–18:00 can push it past two hours. The pinch points northbound are the junction 10 / A3 Wisley works, still active through August 2026, and the J13–J15 Heathrow stretch, among the busiest sections of motorway in Britain.
Which Heathrow terminal you are heading for moves the arrival time by about ten minutes — Terminal 5 is the quickest to reach from the M25, Terminals 2 and 3 sit deepest in the central area. The fare is the same to all of them.
| When you travel | Typical door-to-door | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Before 06:30 | 50–60 min | Clear run — ideal for an early Heathrow long-haul. |
| 07:00–09:00 weekday | 85–120 min | Heathrow-side M25 at its worst. |
| 09:30–15:00 | 60–80 min | The most predictable window. |
| 15:00–18:00 weekday | 85–120 min | Evening peak; worse on a Friday. |
| After 19:30 & overnight | 50–65 min | Quiet, but when J10 lane closures run. |

We meet you inside arrivals — North or South
Gatwick's two terminals are a three-minute automated shuttle apart and your driver needs to be in the right one. Tell us the terminal at booking — it is on your airline confirmation — and we are waiting in that hall when you clear customs.
North Terminal arrivals
British Airways (long-haul), TUI, Norwegian, WestJet and some easyJet routes.
Driver inside North arrivals with a name board, luggage carried to the car in the short-stay car park alongside.
South Terminal arrivals
easyJet (most routes), Ryanair, Vueling, British Airways short-haul and others.
The busier hall, because it connects straight to Gatwick railway station. An inside meet-and-greet avoids the forecourt entirely.
Dropped at the right terminal
Heathrow's inter-terminal transfer is not trivial with luggage and a check-in deadline, so getting the terminal right first time matters more here than anywhere else in London. Tell us at booking.
| Heathrow terminal | Who flies from it |
|---|---|
| Terminal 2 — The Queen's Terminal | The Star Alliance home: Lufthansa, United, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, Air India, Turkish, Swiss. Plus Aer Lingus, Icelandair and Eurowings. |
| Terminal 3 | Mostly oneworld: American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Finnair, Japan Airlines. Plus Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and Delta. |
| Terminal 4 | The SkyTeam base, plus Qatar Airways, Etihad, Gulf Air, Malaysia Airlines, El Al and Vueling. |
| Terminal 5 | British Airways (most of its Heathrow flights) and Iberia. |
| Terminal 1 | Closed since June 2015 and demolished. If a booking or an old guide says Terminal 1, it is out of date. |
Airlines move between terminals from time to time. Your boarding pass or booking confirmation is definitive — check it close to travel, or send us the flight number and we will confirm it.
Two that catch people out
American Airlines is at Terminal 3, not Terminal 5. It moved to T5 in 2020 and moved back to T3 in July 2022 — a lot of guidance online still has the old answer. And Virgin Atlantic is at Terminal 3 even though Terminal 4 is the SkyTeam terminal.
Heathrow's drop-off charge, 2026
£7 per visit at every terminal, with a strict 10-minute maximum from January 2026 — no waiting or pick-ups permitted in the drop-off zones. ANPR-enforced, payable by midnight the following day; unpaid it becomes an £80 charge, £40 if paid within 14 days. Blue Badge holders are exempt from both charge and time limit. The Park & Ride car parks (formerly Long Stay) allow free drop-off with a free bus to the terminal.
Charges are set by Heathrow Airport, not by RushXO, and can change. With a RushXO booking any applicable charge is accounted for at booking — there is nothing to settle on the day.
If you are flying from Terminal 4
T4 changed in June 2026 and much of the parking advice online predates it. The multi-storey car park closed on 23 June 2026; pick-ups moved to Park & Ride Zone A with up to two hours free and a shuttle roughly every five minutes. There is also a new Priority Pick-Up area on its own tariff. None of it affects a RushXO drop-off, but it is worth knowing if someone is meeting you.
Connecting? Four hours, not three
British Airways recommends at least three hours between flights at these two airports, and states that baggage is not forwarded — you reclaim every bag at Gatwick and check it in again at Heathrow. Treat three hours as the floor: we would book four as standard, five at weekday peaks or in winter. Heathrow asks for three hours before a long-haul departure, and bag drop closes 60 minutes before on most long-haul services.
