Dover is the cruise port under the white cliffs, 80 miles south-east of London and closer to Gatwick and London City than to Heathrow. It handles Viking, Saga, Fred. Olsen, Holland America, Oceania and the expedition lines, along with Disney's seasonal European programme, and it has two cruise terminals in the Western Docks that visitors regularly confuse with the ferry port on the other side of the harbour. A pre-booked private transfer meets you in the arrivals hall, tracks the flight, carries the cruise luggage and drops you at the right terminal — at a fare fixed in pounds before you left home.
| Terminal | Where | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Cruise Terminal 1 | Western Docks — the restored Edwardian Marine Station building | Most cruise calls and turnarounds; check-in inside the historic station |
| Cruise Terminal 2 | Western Docks, further along the pier | Larger ships and busy turnaround days when two ships are in |
| Eastern Docks ferry terminal | Across the harbour, under the castle | P&O Ferries and DFDS to Calais/Dunkirk — not cruises. Dover ferry transfers |
The port announces which cruise terminal each ship uses a few days ahead; we check it the day before and drop you at that terminal's baggage drop. Tell a rideshare driver "Dover port" and you may be taken to the ferry terminal, a mile and a harbour away from your ship.

Dover sailings mostly depart between 16:00 and 18:00, with check-in windows staggered by cabin grade or deck from about midday and closing 60–90 minutes before departure. Viking and Saga in particular run tightly scheduled boarding. From Gatwick or London City an overnight flight landing before 09:00 makes a same-day sailing with reasonable margin; from Heathrow it is tighter (three hours or more of M25 on a bad day); from Stansted or Luton, arrive the day before. Deciding: timing the Dover and Southampton run · Dover vs Southampton vs Tilbury.
Arriving the day before, Dover itself has a limited hotel stock; many passengers stay in Canterbury (20 minutes away, and worth the evening) or in London and take the morning transfer. Pre-embarkation hotel transfers.
If the flight is late enough to threaten the sailing we tell you before you reach the port and help re-plan. Missed it anyway? What to do if you miss your ship at Dover.
Ships are alongside by 06:00–07:00 and disembarkation runs to about 10:00. Gatwick is the natural airport for a same-day flight home from Dover (13:00 onwards is safe from a standard disembarkation group); Heathrow needs 14:00 or later. Dover same-day return transfers · Disembarkation pickup guide.
