It is about 28 miles by road via the A23 and M23, typically 50 to 75 minutes depending on traffic. Outside the morning and evening peaks it is usually around an hour, door to forecourt.

Isn't the Gatwick Express cheaper than a taxi?

Per person the Express is cheaper, but it arrives at Gatwick station on the South Terminal side, so for North Terminal you then take the free inter-terminal shuttle with your luggage.
