Southampton cruise port transfers for arriving passengers
Southampton is Britain's cruise capital and the port that visitors flying in from the US, Canada, Australia and the Gulf are most likely to sail from. It is 75 miles from Heathrow, 65 from Gatwick, and has five cruise terminals spread across two dock areas that are not within walking distance of each other. A pre-booked private transfer meets you in the arrivals hall, tracks your flight, carries all the cruise luggage, and drops you at the baggage drop of the terminal your ship is actually using — for a fare fixed in pounds before you left home.
Ocean, Mayflower, QEII, Horizon and City, spread across the Western and Eastern Docks. Your cruise documents name the one you need, and it is the single most useful thing you can tell us when you book.
Southampton's five cruise terminals
The port does not use a single "cruise terminal". Which one you need depends on the ship and can change from sailing to sailing, so we confirm it against the port's schedule the day before and drive to that terminal. As a guide:
| Terminal | Dock area | Typically used by |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean Terminal | Eastern Docks | Cunard (Queen Mary 2, Queen Anne), P&O, larger ships |
| QEII Terminal | Eastern Docks | Cunard, P&O, Princess, Celebrity, MSC |
| Mayflower Terminal | Western Docks | P&O, Princess, Royal Caribbean, NCL |
| City Cruise Terminal | Western Docks | Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, MSC, Fred. Olsen |
| Horizon Cruise Terminal | Western Docks | MSC, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity — the newest terminal |
Cruise-line specifics: Cunard · P&O · Royal Caribbean · Celebrity · MSC · Princess · Norwegian. Your ship's e-ticket will name the terminal a few days out; if you are not sure, send us the ship name and date and we check.

Arriving the day before — what most passengers do
Ships from Southampton mostly sail between 16:00 and 17:30, with check-in closing 60–90 minutes earlier. Overnight flights from North America land at Heathrow from about 06:00, so a same-day connection is possible — but a long-haul delay eats the margin fast. Most passengers who have done it once book the night before:
- In Southampton: we drop you at a city or waterfront hotel after landing and you walk or take a 5-minute car to the terminal the next day. The night before a Southampton cruise.
- Near the airport: a Heathrow or Gatwick hotel on landing day, then a morning transfer to the port — the cheapest way to add margin. The overnight layover strategy.
- In London: a night or two of sightseeing, then a morning pickup from the hotel. London hotels and cruise luggage.
Deciding? How early should I leave for Southampton? and the same-day risk window.
What happens on the day
- Land. The driver is dispatched to the live landing time. Clear the border, collect the cases, walk out — the name board is in the arrivals hall.
- Drive. The M25 and M3 to Southampton; the driver is watching the port's traffic and the ship's terminal.
- Terminal. The car stops at the baggage drop; porters take your labelled cases to the ship. You walk into check-in with hand luggage. Turnaround days are busy, but vehicles are marshalled — a pre-booked car goes straight to the drop-off lane.

Disembarkation: Southampton to the airport
Ships arrive at dawn; disembarkation runs in groups from roughly 07:00 to 10:00. We collect you at the terminal in the pickup lane, timed to your group, and the earliest flight we recommend from Heathrow is around 13:00. Details and timings: Southampton to Heathrow, Southampton to Gatwick, Southampton to Luton, Southampton to Stansted. If you have arrived in port and there is no car — no car at the terminal explains what to do.
