Section 02The trains
Stansted Express — the fast one
Direct to Liverpool Street with one stop at Tottenham Hale (Victoria line) — often the smarter exit if you're heading to the West End, King's Cross or north London. Free Wi-Fi, power sockets, proper luggage space, and a refreshment trolley. Contactless, Apple Pay and Google Pay now accepted like the Underground. Last train ~00:30; extra Friday-night summer services run late.
Greater Anglia stopping trains — rail for less
Same line, more stops, smaller fare. Only ~10 minutes slower than the Express to Liverpool Street when booked as an Advance ticket. Railcards knock a further ⅓ off.
CrossCountry — skip London entirely
Heading north? Direct trains run from Stansted to Cambridge, Peterborough, Leicester and Birmingham — no need to touch London at all.
Section 03The coaches — Stansted's secret weapon
Stansted has the busiest airport-coach market in Britain: 200+ daily National Express departures plus Flibco and Airport Bus Express, all 24 hours. The coach station sits directly opposite the terminal entrance.
National Express A6 · A8 · A9 — pick by destination
A6 → Tottenham Hale, Golders Green, Finchley Rd, St John's Wood, Baker Street, Paddington, Victoria — the north-west/west route.
A8 → Stamford Hill, Shoreditch, Liverpool Street, Waterloo, Victoria — the City & South Bank route.
A9 → Stratford, Bow, Mile End, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf, Liverpool Street — the east route, and usually the quickest coach into a tube hub (Stratford ≈ 50 min, Elizabeth & Jubilee lines).
Flibco — the tube-hub shuttle
Modern direct shuttles to Liverpool Street (via Redbridge & Stratford), Stratford direct, and Finsbury Park direct — each drop chosen for its Underground connections (Central, Elizabeth, Jubilee, Victoria, Piccadilly lines).
Airport Bus Express, Megabus, Terravision & easyBus
Airport Bus Express runs its own coaches (flat-fee, any-time flexible tickets), mainly to Stratford and Liverpool Street; Megabus sells seats on them. Terravision and easyBus are booking portals reselling the National Express network — occasionally cheaper, same coaches.
Section 04The cars — Uber vs fixed-fare taxi
Uber / Bolt — flexible, surge-exposed, 40 miles out
Stansted's distance (~40 miles) makes rideshare pricey even off-peak. Late-night arrivals — exactly when Ryanair schedules cluster — are prime surge territory, and driver availability out at Stansted is thinner than at Heathrow or Gatwick.
Pre-booked fixed-fare taxi — the door-to-door certainty
Price agreed and locked at booking — same fare at 3am as 3pm. Rushxo drivers track the flight, meet you in arrivals, wait free through delays, and drive door-to-door. For 3–4 people sharing, the per-head cost lands near Express-ticket territory with none of the transfers.
Landing at midnight? Your price won't surge.
Pre-booked private hire from Stansted, flight-tracked with meet & greet and 45-minute free waiting. Fixed price locked at booking — saloons, executive cars and 8-seat MPVs. WhatsApp your flight number for an instant quote.
Section 05Which option for your scenario?
| Your situation | Best pick | Backup |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, City/Liverpool St, daytime | Stansted Express | Greater Anglia advance |
| West End / north London | Express → Tottenham Hale + Victoria line | NX A6 to Baker St |
| East London / Canary Wharf | NX A9 or Flibco to Stratford | Express + tube |
| Tightest budget, booked ahead | Coach from ~£5 (NX/Flibco) | Greater Anglia £8.50 |
| Landing after 00:30 | Pre-booked fixed-fare taxi | 24h NX coach / Flibco |
| Family / group of 3–4 | Fixed-fare taxi (split ≈ £25–35 pp) | Express Duo/GroupSave fares |
| Onward to Cambridge / Midlands | CrossCountry direct | — |
| Ryanair delay risk, flexible coach | NX + £5 Change & Go | Airport Bus Express any-time ticket |
Section 06Night arrivals — after the last train
The last Stansted Express leaves around 00:30 (allow an hour+ post-landing for passport control before counting on it). After that: National Express A6/A8/A9 and Flibco run all night, roughly every 30–60 minutes, and a pre-booked fixed-fare taxi waits regardless of how late the flight slips — same price, tracked flight, no surge. Summer Friday nights add extra late Express services to Tottenham Hale; check before relying on them.
