Section 02The trains

Stansted Express — the fast one

47–48 minevery 15 min36 min to Tottenham Halecontactless ✓ · Oyster ✗

Direct to Liverpool Street with one stop at Tottenham Hale (Victoria line) — often the smarter exit if you're heading to the West End, King's Cross or north London. Free Wi-Fi, power sockets, proper luggage space, and a refreshment trolley. Contactless, Apple Pay and Google Pay now accepted like the Underground. Last train ~00:30; extra Friday-night summer services run late.

Choose it when: speed matters, you're City-bound, or Tottenham Hale + Victoria line beats a coach crawl to your area. Duo/group and Railcard fares can undercut coaches for 2–4 travellers.
Skip it when: your hotel is nowhere near Liverpool Street — the onward tube leg can erase the time saved. Watch for engineering-work weekends.

Greater Anglia stopping trains — rail for less

~50–60 minevery 30 minfrom ~£8.50 advance

Same line, more stops, smaller fare. Only ~10 minutes slower than the Express to Liverpool Street when booked as an Advance ticket. Railcards knock a further ⅓ off.

Choose it when: you want the train experience at coach-adjacent prices and can book ahead.

CrossCountry — skip London entirely

Cambridge ~30 minBirmingham direct

Heading north? Direct trains run from Stansted to Cambridge, Peterborough, Leicester and Birmingham — no need to touch London at all.

Section 03The coaches — Stansted's secret weapon

Stansted has the busiest airport-coach market in Britain: 200+ daily National Express departures plus Flibco and Airport Bus Express, all 24 hours. The coach station sits directly opposite the terminal entrance.

National Express A6 · A8 · A9 — pick by destination

from ~£5 advance24/7Change & Go +£5 = 12h flex

A6 → Tottenham Hale, Golders Green, Finchley Rd, St John's Wood, Baker Street, Paddington, Victoria — the north-west/west route.
A8 → Stamford Hill, Shoreditch, Liverpool Street, Waterloo, Victoria — the City & South Bank route.
A9Stratford, Bow, Mile End, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf, Liverpool Street — the east route, and usually the quickest coach into a tube hub (Stratford ≈ 50 min, Elizabeth & Jubilee lines).

Pro move: the £5 "Change & Go" add-on lets you board any coach ±12 hours — delay-proof for £5. Flight late? Just take the next one.
Skip it when: it's Friday-evening traffic and you're on a deadline — road times stretch badly at peak.

Flibco — the tube-hub shuttle

every 30 min24 hoursfrom ~£6

Modern direct shuttles to Liverpool Street (via Redbridge & Stratford), Stratford direct, and Finsbury Park direct — each drop chosen for its Underground connections (Central, Elizabeth, Jubilee, Victoria, Piccadilly lines).

Choose it when: your plan is "coach to a tube, tube to the door" — Finsbury Park direct is gold for north London.

Airport Bus Express, Megabus, Terravision & easyBus

from ~£7Stratford · Liverpool St

Airport Bus Express runs its own coaches (flat-fee, any-time flexible tickets), mainly to Stratford and Liverpool Street; Megabus sells seats on them. Terravision and easyBus are booking portals reselling the National Express network — occasionally cheaper, same coaches.

Choose them when: a portal deal beats booking direct — always compare the same departure across sites.

Section 04The cars — Uber vs fixed-fare taxi

Uber / Bolt — flexible, surge-exposed, 40 miles out

60–100 min£70–£180on-demand

Stansted's distance (~40 miles) makes rideshare pricey even off-peak. Late-night arrivals — exactly when Ryanair schedules cluster — are prime surge territory, and driver availability out at Stansted is thinner than at Heathrow or Gatwick.

Skip it when: it's a 23:50 landing with the app showing 1.8x — that's a £150+ ride you could have fixed at £95.

Pre-booked fixed-fare taxi — the door-to-door certainty

60–90 min£90–£140 lockedflight-tracked ✓24/7

Price agreed and locked at booking — same fare at 3am as 3pm. Rushxo drivers track the flight, meet you in arrivals, wait free through delays, and drive door-to-door. For 3–4 people sharing, the per-head cost lands near Express-ticket territory with none of the transfers.

Choose it when: late-night Ryanair/easyJet arrivals, families with luggage, groups splitting the fare, or onward addresses far from Liverpool Street.
Honest note: solo at midday with hand luggage? The Express or a £6 Flibco is the rational pick.
⚇ Stansted Fixed-Fare Transfers

Landing at midnight? Your price won't surge.

Pre-booked private hire from Stansted, flight-tracked with meet & greet and 45-minute free waiting. Fixed price locked at booking — saloons, executive cars and 8-seat MPVs. WhatsApp your flight number for an instant quote.

Section 06Night arrivals — after the last train

The last Stansted Express leaves around 00:30 (allow an hour+ post-landing for passport control before counting on it). After that: National Express A6/A8/A9 and Flibco run all night, roughly every 30–60 minutes, and a pre-booked fixed-fare taxi waits regardless of how late the flight slips — same price, tracked flight, no surge. Summer Friday nights add extra late Express services to Tottenham Hale; check before relying on them.

Section 07Stansted to London — FAQ

What's the cheapest way from Stansted to London?
Advance coach seats — National Express, Flibco or Airport Bus Express from about £5–£8 to Stratford, Liverpool Street or Victoria. Cheapest rail is a Greater Anglia Advance from ~£8.50. Walk-up on the day, coaches still usually beat the train.
Is the Stansted Express worth it?
For speed, yes: 47–48 min to Liverpool Street, every 15 minutes, with Wi-Fi and luggage space. But coaches cost roughly half and the A9/Flibco to Stratford is only ~20–30 min slower door-to-tube. Groups should price Express Duo/GroupSave fares before deciding.
Can I use Oyster at Stansted?
No — Oyster is not valid to or from Stansted Airport. Contactless bank cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay ARE accepted on Stansted Express and Greater Anglia. Without valid payment you risk a £100 penalty fare.
How do I get to London after the last train?
National Express (A6, A8, A9) and Flibco coaches run 24 hours. Or pre-book a fixed-fare taxi — Rushxo tracks your flight and the price is identical at 2am, typically £90–£140 door-to-door.
Which coach stop is best for me?
Stratford (A9/Flibco) for east London, Elizabeth & Jubilee lines. Liverpool Street (A8/Flibco) for the City. Baker Street/Paddington (A6) for the West End and west. Finsbury Park (Flibco) for north London, Victoria & Piccadilly lines. Victoria (A6/A8) for the south-west.
Stansted Express vs coach — real door-to-door difference?
To Liverpool Street itself the Express wins by 20–40 minutes. To anywhere needing a tube from Liverpool Street, a direct coach to a stop nearer your destination often ties or wins — for half the fare. Map your final address first, then choose.
How much is a taxi from Stansted to central London?
Pre-booked fixed fares run £90–£140 depending on vehicle and postcode, locked at booking. Uber ranges ~£70 off-peak to £180 in surge. Journey time 60–90 minutes.
How early should I leave London for a Stansted flight?
The airport advises generous margins: by coach allow up to 4 hours before departure at peak; by Express, 2.5–3 hours is comfortable including security. Stansted security queues can be long — Advance-book Fast Track (£7) if tight.
