East of Tower Bridge the Thames has very few crossings, so public transport loops miles to the nearest bridge or tunnel. A fixed-fare car takes the direct crossing — and the toll is already in your price.
Why the river is such a barrier
West and central London have bridges every few hundred metres; downstream of Tower Bridge they're scarce, so a trip that's a mile as the crow flies can be a long, change-heavy public-transport journey to the nearest crossing and back.
The crossings we use
The Dartford Crossing (M25) links Kent and Essex — its toll is included in your fixed fare. The Blackwall and new Silvertown tunnels connect Greenwich and the Royal Docks; the Rotherhithe Tunnel serves Wapping and Limehouse; and where the Woolwich Ferry would mean a wait, a tunnel is usually quicker by car.
One car, no detour
Instead of looping to a bridge and changing trains, a fixed-fare car takes the nearest crossing directly, door to door — with the toll, the Congestion Charge and any surge all off the table.
