Almost every racecourse worth travelling to is reached down country lanes. Haydock sits directly beside junction 23 of the M6, which makes it the most accessible major course in Britain by road and, after four hours of driving from Kent, considerably more welcome than it sounds.
The course is right there. No lanes, no villages, no last-mile crawl. Compare that with Goodwood on the Downs or Cadwell in the Wolds and the difference at the end of a long journey is substantial.

A day at Haydock

After four and a half hours from Kent, the difference between coming off a motorway into a car park and negotiating six miles of country lane behind three thousand other vehicles is enormous. Haydock is the only major British racecourse that gives you the former, and it is the reason we recommend it to groups who want a northern meeting without the usual last-mile exercise.

Flat racing in the summer and a strong National Hunt programme through the winter, which means a February meeting here is a cold-weather day with all that implies for clothing and for vehicle space. Two cities to choose from
Liverpool is twenty miles away and Manchester twenty-five, which gives a Kent group staying over more choice than at any other northern course. Both have plenty of accommodation and a good evening in them, and pricing the racing and the hotel runs as one arrangement works out better than treating them separately.
A weekend of two courses works well
Aintree, Chester and Oulton Park are all within half an hour, which makes this corner of the north west unusually good for a group prepared to travel. Racing on the Saturday and something else on the Sunday, one vehicle, one booking, and the long journey from Kent gets amortised across two days rather than one.
