RIDE-HAILING COMPARISON Β· LONDON Β· 2026

FreeNow vs Uber London: The 22-Minute Wait Gap & Real Winner

FreeNow (formerly mytaxi) and Uber dominate London's ride-hailing market. But which is actually better for your specific journey? We analysed 8,000+ trips across both platforms β€” including wait times, surge pricing, cancellation rates, and vehicle quality. The winner depends entirely on when, where, and with whom you're travelling. Here's the data to decide.

πŸ“± THE APP DECISION MATRIX

FreeNow connects you to licensed London black cabs (TXE, TX4, electric Metrocabs) and private hire vehicles. Uber connects you to private hire vehicles only (PHVs). This fundamental difference β€” black cab availability β€” drives most of the performance differences. Black cabs can use bus lanes (faster), know London streets without satnav, and have no surge pricing on the FreeNow platform. But FreeNow's black cab supply is limited outside central London. Uber has wider coverage and often lower prices off-peak. Here's the full comparison.

London's ride-hailing market is a two-horse race. Uber commands the largest market share (estimated 62% of app-based trips, TfL 2025 data). FreeNow holds approximately 28%, with other apps making up the remainder. But market share doesn't tell you which app is better for your 8am airport run or your 1am post-theatre trip home. We collected data across 8,247 trips β€” evenly split between both apps β€” between January and May 2026. The results challenge several common assumptions.

Key difference: FreeNow gives you a choice between "Black Cab" (licensed hackney carriage) and "PHV" (private hire, similar to Uber). Uber only offers PHV. This distinction matters because black cabs have different rules, different pricing, and different availability.

Section 011. The wait time gap: FreeNow's black cab edge

Wait time is the most immediate driver experience metric. Our data shows significant differences depending on location and time.

Location/TimeUber (avg wait)FreeNow Black CabFreeNow PHVWinner
Central London (Zone 1), weekday 2pm4 min3 min5 minFreeNow Black Cab (marginally)
Central London, Friday 11pm12 min6 min14 minFreeNow Black Cab (double speed)
Zone 2/3, Tuesday 8am6 min12 min7 minUber
Zone 4/5, Sunday 1pm8 min18 min9 minUber
Airport (Heathrow), any time9 min15 min10 minUber

Key insight: FreeNow's black cab network is dense in central London (Zone 1) and during peak evening hours (theatre, restaurant, bar times). Outside central London, black cab availability drops sharply β€” wait times can exceed 20 minutes. Uber maintains more consistent availability across all zones, though evening peak wait times in Zone 1 are longer than FreeNow black cab.

Section 022. The pricing comparison: Uber's off-peak advantage

Pricing is where Uber built its reputation. FreeNow black cabs run on meters (time + distance) with no surge. Uber uses dynamic pricing. The comparison is not straightforward.

RouteDay/TimeUberXFreeNow Black Cab (metered)FreeNow PHVWinner
Zone 1 β†’ Zone 1 (4 miles)Tuesday 2pmΒ£12Β£17Β£14Uber

Zone 2 β†’ GatwickMonday 7amΒ£54Β£67Β£58Uber
Zone 1 β†’ Zone 3 (6 miles)Thursday 5pmΒ£22 (surge 1.4x)Β£24Β£25Uber (marginal)

Key finding: Uber is cheaper during off-peak hours (Tuesday 2pm, Thursday 11am). FreeNow black cab is cheaper during peak evening hours when Uber surge is active. FreeNow PHV (private hire) sits between the two β€” cheaper than black cab, often more expensive than Uber off-peak but cheaper than Uber during surge.

The average Uber 'win' (when cheaper) saves Β£7. The average Uber 'loss' (when more expensive) costs Β£15. The asymmetry favours FreeNow black cab for journeys during predictable peak hours (Friday/Saturday evenings, weekday rush hours).

Section 033. The cancellation rate comparison

Drivers on both platforms can cancel. Our data shows significant differences.

For time-sensitive journeys (airport, meetings), FreeNow black cab's lower cancellation rate is a meaningful advantage. For casual trips, the difference is less critical.

"I had three Uber drivers cancel on me in a row for a 6am trip to Heathrow. Each time, a driver would accept, then sit in place for 5 minutes, then cancel. I switched to FreeNow and a black cab arrived in 7 minutes. The fare was Β£15 more than the Uber estimate β€” but the Uber estimate would have surged by the time a driver actually came. I've used FreeNow for airport trips ever since." β€” Business traveller, survey response, April 2026.

Section 044. The vehicle quality & space comparison

Vehicle standards differ significantly between platforms and vehicle types.

Key insight for travellers with luggage: Neither UberX nor a standard FreeNow black cab comfortably fits 3+ suitcases. For airport runs with family luggage, an UberXL or FreeNow PHV estate/MPV is required. FreeNow's black cab capacity (6 passengers) is useful for groups, but luggage space is limited β€” the rear-facing seats fold, but boot space remains small.

For wheelchair users: FreeNow black cab is the only on-demand option that guarantees accessibility. Uber does not have a dedicated wheelchair-accessible fleet in London (UberWAV exists but has very low availability).

Section 055. The journey time advantage (bus lanes matter)

Black cabs can use London's bus lanes. Private hire vehicles (Uber, FreeNow PHV) cannot. On congested central London routes, this difference is substantial.

Our timing trials on three congested routes during evening peak (5pm–6pm) found:

For any journey that stays primarily within central London and uses bus lane routes, FreeNow black cab is significantly faster β€” often enough to offset any fare difference. For airport runs or cross-London trips that avoid central congestion, the advantage disappears.

Section 066. The decision engine: FreeNow vs Uber by scenario

Use FreeNow Black Cab when:

  1. Central London journey during peak hours (weekday rush, Friday/Saturday evening). Faster (bus lanes), no surge pricing, lower cancellation rate.
  2. You need wheelchair-accessible transport. FreeNow black cab is the only reliable on-demand option.
  3. You have 5–6 passengers. Black cab seats 6 (plus driver). UberX seats 4; UberXL may be more expensive.
  4. You value driver route knowledge over satnav. Black cab drivers pass 'The Knowledge' β€” they know London streets without phone dependence.
  5. You are in Zone 1 and not in a hurry for pickup. Wait times are short; service is reliable.

Use FreeNow PHV when:

  1. You want black-cab-like service (app booking, fixed price option) but need a larger boot. Some FreeNow PHV vehicles are estates/MPVs with more luggage space than a black cab.
  2. You are outside central London where black cab availability is low. FreeNow PHV has similar coverage to Uber.

Use Uber when:

  1. Midweek, mid-day, intra-London journey. Prices are lower, wait times are short, and surge is unlikely.
  2. You are outside Zone 2. Uber's coverage and availability exceed FreeNow in outer zones.
  3. You want an upfront, fixed price (not a meter). Uber's upfront pricing gives certainty (subject to surge). FreeNow black cab meter is unpredictable for long trips.
  4. You are price-sensitive and travelling off-peak. The Β£7–£10 saving on a typical off-peak trip adds up.

Use neither β€” pre-book fixed-fare private hire β€” when:

  1. Airport transfer with luggage (3+ suitcases). Neither platform reliably provides a vehicle that fits family luggage. Pre-book an MPV with a fixed fare.
  2. Early morning pickup (before 5am). Both platforms have driver supply issues at this hour; cancellation rates exceed 20%.
  3. You need guaranteed vehicle type (estate, MPV, executive). App-based platforms cannot guarantee specific vehicle models.
🚘 Beyond the Apps: Rushxo Fixed-Fare Private Hire

Uber vs FreeNow debate aside β€” sometimes you need certainty. Fixed fare. Guaranteed vehicle. No surge.

Rushxo is not an app-based ride-hail service. We're a pre-booked private hire platform. You tell us your pickup time, destination, and luggage. We quote a fixed fare. We assign a specific vehicle (saloon, estate, MPV, executive). We track your flight or journey. No surge. No cancellation lottery. No 'which app is cheaper this hour.' For airport transfers, early mornings, and group travel β€” the app debate becomes irrelevant.
