Badminton: it's a hike, not a grandstand
Cross-country day at Badminton is the reason most people go, and it is not a sit-down event. The course runs for miles across a vast estate, spectators walk between fences to follow it, and by the end of the afternoon a good many people have covered five miles without noticing.
Of walking on cross-country day, across parkland that may well be wet. It is the single most useful thing to know before you go, and the thing that separates people who enjoyed it from people who spent the afternoon regretting their footwear.
Five days, and they are not alike
The walking, the crowd and the whole character of the day change completely depending on when you come.
Wednesday and Thursday
Seated, contained and calm. Very little walking, and a much smaller crowd.
Saturday
The big one. Enormous crowd, miles of walking, and the reason most people come.
Sunday
In the arena, seated, and the competition is decided. Far less walking.
All week
Hundreds of trade stands. A significant part of the day for a good many visitors.
Kent to Gloucestershire
Round the M25 and west on the M4. The same run as our Bristol and Gloucester journeys.

What to wear and bring
More important here than at any event on this site except Oulton Park, and for the same reason.
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Wellingtons or walking boots | Several miles of parkland in May, and it is often wet |
| Waterproofs | There is essentially no cover out on the course |
| A rucksack, not a handbag | You are carrying whatever you bring, all day, for miles |
| Food and drink | Catering exists and queues, and you may be a mile from it |
| A bag for muddy boots | So they do not go straight onto the vehicle seats |
A day at Badminton
Pick the day to match the group
This matters more than people expect. If your party includes anyone who would struggle with several miles on uneven wet ground, cross-country Saturday is the wrong choice and dressage or show jumping is the right one. Those days are seated, contained and calm, with the same estate, the same shopping village and a fraction of the crowd.
Boots, genuinely
We say this on every Badminton booking. It is May in Gloucestershire on parkland that has had a hundred thousand people walk over it, and trainers do not survive the morning. Wellingtons or proper walking boots, and a bag to put them in for the journey home, which saves everybody a conversation about cleaning charges.
The shopping village is half the event for many
Hundreds of trade stands, and a significant proportion of visitors treat it as the main attraction with the horses as a bonus. Worth knowing when you plan the day, because it also means people come back to the vehicle carrying considerably more than they left with. Tell us if that is likely and we will size accordingly.
Three hours makes it a long day return
At around a hundred and forty miles this works as a single day, leaving Kent early and getting home in the evening. Cross-country day in particular is a long one on your feet, so a coach with proper seats for the journey home is worth more than it sounds after five miles of parkland.
Badminton questions
Days, distance and footwear.
How much walking is there?
On cross-country day, several miles across a very large estate as you follow the course between fences. Many people cover five miles without noticing.
Which day should we choose?
Cross-country Saturday for the spectacle, if everyone in the group can manage the walking. Dressage or show jumping days are seated, calm and far less demanding.
What should we wear?
Wellingtons or proper walking boots and waterproofs. It is May in Gloucestershire on parkland, there is no cover out on the course, and trainers do not survive it.
How far is Badminton from Kent?
Around a hundred and thirty to a hundred and eighty miles, roughly two and a half to four hours each way on the M25 and M4.
Can we do it as a day return?
Yes, leaving early and getting home in the evening. Cross-country day is a long one on your feet, so the seats on the way home matter.
What is the shopping village?
Hundreds of trade stands, which a significant share of visitors treat as the main attraction. It also means people return to the vehicle carrying more than they left with.
What about muddy boots afterwards?
Bring a bag for them. There is usually a cleaning charge if a vehicle needs proper attention, and a bag almost always avoids it.
Is the fare fixed?
Yes, agreed before travel and unaffected by motorway delays or how long you stay.
